Inspired for the Present, releasing Past Limits..

My 9 year old son and I started a nice night time dialogue of deliberate choice. This is where we talk about the things that challenge us, and then the strategy for what we will do and how cool it will be when the goals are met.

Intent is to create a positive expectation to practice becoming the person that feels happy and connected more than afraid and negative. Sometimes we feel an attachment to the limitation that keeps us romanticizing how difficult it is..

If what we think about, we tend to bring about, good or bad, it makes sense to focus on good more than bad. The purpose of meditation is to calm the mind to focus on feeling better. We talked about the difference between positive and negative thinking. Positive is connected to the logic that somewhere there is at least 3 solutions to any issue. Negative is shutting down, hiding, acting out or believing that this is the best we can do and that no solutions exist but to accept failure. Situations are not really so much positive or negative so much as how we choose to experience them.

CAN I CALM MY MIND FOR TO APPRECIATE COURAGE, FRIENDS, TRUST, and BLESSINGS?

So we came up with ideas to become more aware of our role in choosing amazing experiences. This does not mean denying a feeling that is negative, but it does mean being in touch with our feelings and visualizing more what we want to accomplish then what we might dread if the worst case scenario came to be.
USE CASE: WHAT IS HAPPENING THAT CAUSES YOU TO FEEL SAD, DEPRESSED OR FEARFUL: My son shared a fear that the neighbor boy who is now bullying him, who was once his friend, would make all his friends turn against him and he would be left alone and friendless.

Why do you feel your friends would turn against you if they stood to be bullied too? Lets explore and affirm what values you want to see in your friends and then make choices accordingly.
  • What values do real friends embody?
  • What do they do that is different to make them friends?
  • What are some things you CAN do to stop feeling stuck?
  • What can you do to choose a happier foundation for you and your friends to enjoy?
THINGS IN THE MICROSCOPE OR REAR VIEW MIRROR MAY APPEAR LARGER THAN THEY ARE. Focus on a thought can make it bigger than it it. Perspective on a microscope lets you view a strand of hair that looks thicker than a rope. So it is with our thoughts... Focus on thoughts-- any type, may make them appear larger then they are.

  • Think you are having a good day?
  • Think you are having a bad day?
  • You are probably either right or about to make it so.
LEARNING TO RELEASE THOSE THINGS YOU DON'T WANT, MAKES ROOM FOR WHAT YOU DO WANT. Clear clutter as if they represent a bunch of things gathered around because they have always been there and once had value. Choose to clean up your mind, your workspace, and your environment to step bravely into the person you want to see, and the people you want to associate with.

Seeking Patterns to Prepare for Business

When falling out of balance we often seek to rebalance and refocus by seeking patterns to assimilate our next steps from. Announcement of a layoff is unsettling at a corporate and personal level.

This is a time where human nature being what it is, seeks to discover patterns in communication style, that helps us plan for business refocus. We all know we share an equal stake of risk to being laid off. Looking for a pattern as to who is laid off and how that will relate to you is impractical, although often irresistable self indulgence.

It is a time when we can focus ourselves best with a flexibility of not reading and acting too much on unchecked assumptions. If we have a equal probability of staying in our jobs, or going, is often nothing we can control. So what then is a good way to use our desire for patterns to trace a path forward?

Choose the logic that best supports forward momentum.
Weed out the logic that speculates, but to undermine the most likely options.

LOGIC OF NOW: Who should I be, how should I be working to represent my brand, and that of my employer? You could ask us not to read more into an activity, but you can not expect us to not try to find where we fit into the picture of an organization under change. What should I be in either likely scenario? What is required for us to be successful regardless of news. AND not to take the press to literally?

WEEDING UNPRODUCTIVE THOUGHT: "What can and must I do to stop this insanity?" Its difficult and getting bad. Should I give up? Did I stay too long?

Is there a good way to "Lay Off" ?

There are a myriad of ways employers can elect to notify their workforce that because they did not make their numbers, or as a result of the changing business climate, must reduce forces. Is there a good way to lay off talent? If good news comes in the forms of excited headlines celebrating specific success, and bad news comes in the form of "Today's Announcement" of "tomorrow's meeting" with specific outcome but generic impact...

The loss of team members, of leaders, and work, the very issue of preparing to be affected by a layoff stinks. It stinks for businesses that care, and the people that cared to make that business. Hard to focus when you don't know exactly WHAT to focus on, to be of the greatest use to the success of the business.

As individual contributors, as managers, and leaders, how do we react to such news? Is there a good way for employees to respond to news of layoff? Human nature being what it is, here are some things we can do to react as professionals in a way that does more damage to ourselves, and our business than help:

  1. Survival of the Fittest Mode: Show yourself as a raving success, with evidence of others failures to ensure you are not the "cut" percentage.
  2. Fearful "what if" mode: Look around and try to speculate with the little information you have.
  3. "Its so bad, our best resource is to panic mode": If you must collect news to assemble how you will survive the scariest of situations, make sure you don't romance in limitation.
  4. "Put your head down, lock your doors and hide mode:" When fearful thoughts connect, remember it is networking that creates most opportunity, now is not the time to get introspectively alone. Give the love you want to be receiving in this time, it will return to you and those that are likely feeling the need for appreciation in a time of speculation.
What is the kindest thing you have seen done in to help others during a difficult layoff time? How do you support your colleagues, your team, your business in times of business challenge to keep the focus and adjust to the human needs?

Let us keep in mind that there is more productive actions and choices we can make than worry. Let us find the grace to stay connected, keep caring, and keep making a difference.. That is our competitive value whether or not we stay employed together or not. It also is the vehicle that will help us connect to our next opportunity more readily if it is our time to be laid off.
