See Opportunity.. Be SEEN for Opportunity!

It's winter in Ohio.. and coooold. I am amazed that on the verge of winter, there are still cardinals, blue jays, and woodpeckers snacking on the seed I hung in the trees... How do they know that there is still food at my house, and that it's there for them.. I keep it out there because I very much enjoy a day with long conference calls that is filled with a bit more beauty because of the visits from these beautiful scarlet and azure colored birds gracing my office backdrop.

I see Opportunity! It's everywhere, so much great stuff to choose, where to start?
If you build it clearly, whether it's bird food or clear expectations for your next job, the opportunity will be there knocking, will you let it in?

The biggest secret to being an opportunity magnet for perfect opportunity, is to develop the mindset that makes it easy for you to be seen, by people you want to be seeing you! I recently re-read a great book "Attracting Perfect Customers- The Power of Strategic Synchronicity" by Stacey Hall & Jan Brogniez.

Today we will feature some tips for seeing opportunity, and more importantly being seen for the type of career opportunity that compliments your professional expertise.

  1. Be Reachable and Visible. Imagine the Grim Reaper trying to hail a cab for a hospitality job interview in the city. What can we do to be reachable and useful today? Here are some hints for job seekers.
    • Use your time wisely... Whats Next for Momentum should be the thought. Follow up, but don't stop all activity when you get something interesting, just trust that more interesting things could be chosen with a decision to embrace momentum. Show up for the appointments and use every interview until you get the perfect job, to define that perfect fit.
    • Update your social networking profiles. Where you are able to add a LINK in Social Networking, did you know that business professionals are looking for SOMEONE, but they might not know your name? Key words matter. Instead of using the default options for adding a LINK, Name your Link by it's function: (RESUME), this way people doing a search for example for an 'eCommerce Attorney' do not need to wade through a bunch of irrelevant data OR worse, MISS your data!
  2. Clarify your mission and values - for your clarity and others. But refreshing your message for "others" focus to help your muse, and their needs to find you, to need your skills, and to hire you to do what you do best.
  3. Socially Network NOW and a little bit each day. Good investments in time for job seekers and social networking are shared by the Career Doctor on Quintessential Careers. Donate the time you would be spending watching commercials to investing in others. We overestimate the importance of our day to day work, and forget the "inspiration" of friendly checkpoints, of manifesting our more perfect destiny. People make things happen, if we let them... But get too busy with the day to day, and watch people get in the way of your progress.. Fact is, it's not them, it's you.
  4. You've Got the Power.. will you accept that responsibility? Looking for tools and Inspiration to tap that personal power?
    • Check out ManifestYour Potential.com. You control the door, the location, and how people find you by being open and circulating with the knowledge that attraction requires intention and a little consistent action to "germinate". This is an important notion when it feels like nothing is happening, because feelings can distract you, if you let them.
    • Network with other possibility manifestation experts who can celebrate and share with you on the road. LinkedIn2TheSecret and LinkingAndTheSecret are two great Yahoo Groups with community, a links library and more topics.

Insider Secrets for Rejecting Rejection..

Here are some fun Job Seeking Strategies for Rejecting the feelings of Rejection. I grew up in an industry that required a certain level of resilience to survive. It always annoyed me in multi-level marketing, where people were reduced to "numbers" and those "numbers" did not mean real relationships. "Successful" people had a certain vocabulary that soothed them in the face of rejection.

Inspirational Quote to facing rejection: "Some Will, Some Won't, So What.. What's NEXT?

Questions to ask yourself to maintain your best self:
  • What stories are you telling yourself about the significance of rejection?
  • What secret fears are holding you back?
  • If successful recognition of the goal is key, what has this rejection strengthened in your resolve?
  • What would a successful person choose to do with this information to manage their experience?
  • If the world is full of choices, what alternatives might exist?

Strategies:
  1. Reject the Letter of Rejection. This was amusing and funny! Wonder if a formal letter expressing denial of rejection works?
  2. Overcoming the Fear of No Nice blog by Jeremy Steele
  3. Strategies for SW3 to the NEXT power! great article by Terry M. Sullivan.

Social Networking your Job Search.. Fun Ideas that Work!

I was surprised to learn where the bulk of my blog readers came from.. This was a fun thing to learn from Lijit.com , a website where curiosity brings leads, and links, and interest. Today let's share stories and tools for social networking for jobs! The 3 keys to creating a generous rainshower of opportunity exists from:

* Articulating Intent to Accept the Desired Goal.

* Becoming a willing student and teacher.

* Remember PEOPLE are key to meaningful opportunity!

  1. LinkedIn for the hottest opportunities! Linking in creates options by creating an open format for bringing people who want to hire in touch with people who's profile makes them hire-able. What have you done for your resume to make you hireable? HINTS: Your profile should be complete, searchable, with some friends connected--oh and connected to your regular email, not a null email account. For better results, GIVE what you would like to receive. Endorse those you appreciate, and believe it or not THAT brings people to view you as a good supporting team member or leader who values and recognizes their partnerships.
  2. Will Blog For Work! How do you keep your skills sharp, keep connected to your industry, and create interest in your profile? Blog about the interesting news in your industry, ask questions, refine your talents.. Read about the Web Designer who Blogged and got the job... Now this should not be viewed as if job seekers blog-it, hiring managers will come a-knockin', but it becomes part of that package that creates options, particularly if your resume has great readership-- because then you are an industry leader, who shares, and brings the value to the trade you represent. THAT is what gets jobs! HINTS: Your blog should be interesting to those in the industry. For better results GIVE links to leaders you admire and value. When you participate in a community of sharing good ideas, and caring to appreciate and recommend other like minds, you open the door to opportunity. Read Seth Godin's genius hints and How To's! Create and cultivate community! Join MyBlogLog communities of bloggers with common interest. Twitter about your job search, ask about companies of interest, share helpful links that inspire you.
  3. "Ricki Don't Loose that Number". Sometimes we are just looking for a few good people who can vouch for our credibility, our experience and our suitability. Relationships matter, when you need them and when you don't. The time you invest in relationships now, can make sure you stay in touch with those you choose to. Social Networking is a means to reconnect and stay connected.. Use the search engines of your social networking to determine which are most supported by your friends-- I recommend LinkedIn and Plaxo first and foremost leaders in social networking BEST equipped to helping you manage YOUR existing network and keeping in touch naturally. Open Platform Networking is very important and not to be underestimated- Facebook is a popular option right now, and growing like crazy, but if open networking appeals to you, support those open networks that realize they are facilitating YOUR network and not the other way around. HINT: Use Plaxo to Sync your contacts-- bringing it all together- Outlook, Plaxo Address Book, LinkedIn and other contacts-- and making it useable is worth more than casual fun, it is YOUR competitive advantage! USE your LinkedIn Functionality to ask questions, create introductions, and showcase your hard earned endorsements-- others can speak volumes in your favor.

Create Powerful Summary Resume "Objectives"

Where and How do You Orient your Resume Objective to represent you well. Doing it's function, and serving you well, your resume is meant to qualify you to get interviews that give you opportunity to sell your experience.

TheSimpleDollar.com
shared a great article "How to Construct a Killer Resume from Start to Finish." Nice and easy to apply, this approach fits perfectly with my suggestions for refining the objective portion of your resume, which is the aim of this Resume Hint. I think some look to filling each section of a resume with content. Focus on the right content for each section, rather than just filling the space.. this activity makes opportunities, set your aim there!

You can represent yourself well in the objective summary section of your resume!
  • YOU know your skills.
  • YOU know your abilities, desires, and motivations.
  • Readers of your resume don't know your skills, abilities, desires or motivations.
Objective Section Do's and Don'ts.
  • Don't build a strong objective with an apparent glaring weakness.
  • Don't string together a grouping of adjectives and buzz words to represent your goals.
  • Do view this as your 'virtual' introduction to a person who might want to hire you.
  • Do present your objective as a win win proposal with the prospective employer.

Makeover Objective Resume Fashion Faux Pas: Lots of Flash, Colors, Contrasting Adjectives, no Aim:
    • BEFORE: "To establish my exemplary experience as an outstanding professional by making successful, effective and efficient use of my core abilities to secure an interesting and challenging position and thereby be valued member of your organization that's striving to reach meaningful goals."
    • AFTER: "A result-oriented professional with significant experience in human resources management and administrative support. Major strengths in retention program research, resource staffing, and personnel administration. Looking for a company that demands a well organized planner with a successful record in increasing retention, personnel morale, and well versed in Human Resources operations."

MORE: Cover Letter Showcasing or Pet Peeves

Get the ATTENTION you Deserve!
Put your cover letter to work for you, it should be the vehicle that introduces the reader to your resume..

GREAT ARTICLES, SERVICES, and TIPS FOR GREAT COVER LETTERS:

So to creating greater possibilities with cover letters, here are some more cover letter pet peeves:

  • Don't mis-spell as you sell yourself on being a quick learner with attention to detail.
    • "I'm enterested in a ground floor position. I have a good work ethic and know how to learn. I made it through college so surely I can make it through a trainging program with your company."
    • "My current position does not meet my employment criteria, therefore, I am seeking a high level executive adminsitrative assitant position who takes measures to prove success. "
  • Watch your use of double negatives:
    • "Reversed conditions of unproductive offices back to profitability" (Turnaround agent could be good, but it really depends.. How unproductive, How profitable?)
  • Please do not restate the obvious in annoying terms:
    • "As you can see... "
    • "My resume is enclosed as evidence that I meet all of your advertised criteria, an interview will give me the further chance I need to prove my unique suitability to your position. "
Some Winning Approaches to Sell YOUR uniqueness:
    • my sales and management experience is from established "Mom and Pop" companies to Fortune 500 Leaders. I pride myself in strong leadership and am searching for that "right" company that always does the right thingfor their customers, one that I can put heart and soul into continuing this tradition of sales excellence, through uncommon caring."
    • "Formulated process improvement that resulted in $120K and eliminated overhead totalling $xxx for the previous __ years."
    • "I am approaching a new direction with enthusiasm and commitment, excited to transition my ___ experience to deliver __ benefits in this next chapter"
    • "Delivered programs through all distribution channels internationally with programs in Asia, Mexico, South America, Canada and Europe. Programs resulted in ___, growing annual sales x.x% in __ years."

Identifying the Web 2.0 Recruiter Expertise...

What have you read about your industry that created an 'aha' moment of profound inspiration? Always watching the trends of our industry. I like to believe we are all in learning mode and one of the learning topics that interests me most is how to refine my talents as a Recruiter. The fundamental art of recruiting is about finding the right jobs for the right people, and the right people for the jobs.

Whether in the Bay Area or the heart of Nevada, my old days of recruiting "desk work" consisted of 'dialing for dollars' to see who was hiring, screening talent, and "digging through stacks of resumes" and rushing to place those most placeable candidates. Whether Real Estate or Human Resources industry at it's heart does not change all that much.. How we choose to engage, market, deliver our service, and how we are compensated for utilizing technology most certainly does. Our capacity for success is unlimited if we are open to the potential!

Fundamental change in the Web 2.0 Recruiter Experience is one of creativity and collaboration. Gone is the practicality of a 'trade' secret. Replacing this is the logic of wide open networks of profitability and possibility, from collaboration and win win networking.

Ray Van Den Bel produced an interesting article on How to Test Your Online Recruiter's Skills to deliver Open Recruiting-- nice notion, particularly if you are looking to deliver the best tools of today, to identify the jobs and people talent your client's require.

Bill Vick has a fantastic column called Xtreme Recruiting, One Minute Interviews of Recruiting Superstars, that I have much enjoyed as well.

Relax, then Do It... Finding a Job without Desparation!

TRAPS AND TIME WASTERS FOR JOB SEEKERS:
  1. "Spending" free time on unproductive activities. Write down top things to be done each day to move you towards your desired employment... and make sure that's where you invest.
  2. "Too much" networking, too little communicating intent... Collecting connections will not get you jobs, but it will consume as much time as you want to give it. A well thought out communication plan to reach out to your warm contacts, who already know you can clearly articulate your availability to people who CAN and WILL help you.
  3. Desperation is not a value that helps your cause. Don't send a message of panic to all the groups you know of trying to suddenly build a network to help you get a job... Networking does not happen on demand, it happens to be built on trust. Reach out to people who make things happen and ask for their suggestions on how to use networking effectively to meet goals.
  4. Momentum is created in activity not in finding "that one job".. So don't stop looking, interviewing, or refining your brand and career plan until you have landed the job that satisfies your true career objectives. Don't stop interviewing until you have accepted that job that is a fit.
  5. Too much time spent in unproductive assumptions, negative emotion and a sort of "bracing yourself for disappointment" surrounding the job search, responsiveness or interview results, affirming why you can not find a job fit.

TIPS AND TOOLS FOR JOB SEEKERS:
