Becoming Fearless-- A Women Leaders Call to Action

There is immense power to words. Words have the power to become fearful and limiting or fearless and creative. I believe in the notion that what we focus on is magnified in our minds, our lives and our business capability.

Words create actions, actions create beliefs, beliefs create reality and results. The universe has been so kind to me, to share the possibilities of an inspired life with unlimited potential and choices. I forget that I have choices, but the universe is patiently there to remind me that I can let go of attachments from pride, ego, hurt and expectation, and act with a confidence more becoming and productive.

As a woman executive, I was stunned on a radio show to hear the messages from a woman I admire feeling the same way I do everytime I am driving a meaningful change. Arianna Huffington's new book "Becoming Fearless" is a must read and apply for me. Her interview resonated so strongly and so inspired me..

The problem is not that I hear voices that tell me I am unworthy, stupid, not good enough, fast enough, enough enough already. The problem is that sometimes, most particularly when on the virge of a really meaningful achievement, my negative doubt, worry and fear begin to use their "outdoor voice".

The solution is not in the banishing of the voices, the solution is in becoming fearless and that is through becoming our most authentic selves, observation, action and through the power of community!

Are you a Woman Leader, an aspiring or practicing Executive Leader? Do you believe in the woman's power of becoming fearless leaders and achieving history making results? If so, join our new LinkedIn Community.. LIFE_Women (Linked In Fearless Executive Women)

Synchronicity-- A Beginners View into the power of words and powerful intention.

Synchronicity defined in summary as interpreted by Carl Jung is a "meaningful coincidence". I have found inspiration recently in the notion that perhaps there is more meaning in meaning and less in coincidence. Sometimes a self fulfilling prophesy is one that is created with our words, our mind, our experiences affirming our actions and our beliefs.

My friend Rasheed cares enough about the notion that our words become our world, to express a statement that represented a quantum leap in my life. Now this does not mean with the simple utterance and acceptance of that possibility that our words and our actions create some of our experiences was liberating, but words, actions, and a willingness to adjust the attachments we have to explore new possibilities, becomes the liberation.

You see for me life has been a series of mostly positive synchronicities, and some self fulfilling negative synchronicities as well. I prided myself on my creativity, my resilience, and my work ethic, so working a full time job plus "The Helping Friends Career Network" worked perfectly well for me.. I was doing my job which rewarded me richly, and I had my escape plan for when I was eventually laid off. For 5 years I had my escape plan. I networked, I helped others find jobs, I celebrated their success and I rested on my plan.

Many jobs came along during the last 5 years, offering more challenge, more possibility, more compensation, more worldly experience, all terribly inticing, so why was I unwilling to make the change? For me the truth came down to utilizing my gifts on a regular basis to create unlimited business potential. To do this, I had to explore the laws of attraction and creation.

I was very good at creating a reality that kept me living what I felt was my dharma, but not at taking responsibility for my life experience, and the truly positive tranformative elements of it. I am an artist, and the masterpiece is my life, not the paintings I do to express it to others.

To be back in touch with that artist, I must be less tied to the "history" and more tied to the pure potentiality. That said, it came time to explore a new freedom, a new hope and a new synchronity.

Step 1 involves getting back in touch with the dreams, goals and possibilities. I will replace busy work with dream and possibility work.

Step 2 expand your possibilties and write it down. Prioritize the top 10.

Step 3 start writing about the dream, the experience and the goals, and begin your jouney with the reminder thatlife is choice, and wonder, a life lived in dreaming can be filled with a loving serenity.

Step 4 don't lose the vision when life starts happening, repeat the positive vision until there is a knowingness, an appreciation for the possibilities that exist. What might life be like if you attracted this vision? Do not dig up past hurts, pains, sorrows and rejections to judge or stop your forward momentum, focus on magnifying the positive events and steps you take each day towards that vision.

Step 5 is managing your attachment to the desire, or perhaps not even the desire but the feelings leading up to the desire. Sort of a notion of getting out of the way so the real positive change occurs.. This action step might require others with vision, I celebrate the gifts of my relationships with Rasheed and my friend Randy Vanderhoff, who use a completely different language to describe their approach to business, and help me discover my attachments to guilt and self deprication.

Step 6 is exploring the laws of reciprocity.. Give and it is given to you.. The universe has boatloads of stories, the morals of which are give generously to the Universe by "paying it forward". My backing into the Helping Friends Career Network involved letting go of my attachments to an industry I let go of, to help some friends of mine to connect to work in difficult times. However the difficulty had nothing to do with the act or the motivation of the act, merely was a condition of the time of the change.. For me to be truly free to explore my ideal future, I needed to let go of my attachments to my identity in my industry, the locations, the people I work with, etc. to allow something totally new and wonderful to begin.

Prosperity is as possible as creativity. Peace starts in the mind and travels outward to the universe. May our thoughts be exploring a powerful possiblity instead of sustaining a limiting self deception.

Career Movie Review: "Waiting

Saw the 2005 LionsGate Movie "Waiting" this weekend.

This was an independent film, with a curious mix of sophomore-esque comedy and some of the darkest elements of career development.

The movie bill: "Always remember the cardinal rule of eating out: Never mess with people who handle your food".

The photo of Dean (Justin Long) and his mother (Monica Monica) from Waiting represented my favorite interchange and character development. Dean's Mom discussing one of Dean's peers from school who was "making something" of his life, while Dean was drifting through life of waiting at ShenaniganZ. The interchange and the work environment seemed to create the foundation for the most redeeming elements of the movie.

In my review, this is a movie I am happy to have not seen at the theatre, but a good movie for reflection and a reminder that the golden rule is more than just a feel good notion, it could make the difference when eating out.

As in most work environments, there are the clueless managers on a power trip, the "angry" staff that have been there too long, the fun loving sorts, and those who just don't seem to fit in and need to do something more.

Having worked at a few SheaniganZ in my life while going to college, I related to some of the unusual work dynamics. I was reminded and in fact grateful, for a more gentle environment. Dean's character was the one I really related to, someone with a choice to make. Perhaps not clear what the right choice looks like, but reasonably certain what the wrong choice is.

How many of us live our jobs this way? With or without guilt of "not doing enough", accepting the minimal requirements to keep our jobs. What would change if we decided to do something different? Sometimes people choose the discontent they know instead of taking the risk that they might be happier.

REFLECTIONS THAT FIT THE THEME:
  • People matter whether you remember that or not.
  • Treat all others as you would like to be treated.
  • All success is relative, most can advise from the limitations of their experience.
  • Every job has it's dynamic conflicts and human dramas, at the end of the day we are accountable to making good choices to be of service.
  • Failing to define your ideal career, there are plenty willing to do this for you.

Telecommuters-- Are we ALL "Type A" personalities?

Telecommuting is a gift. It is good for family balance, for the economy, saves companies potentially millions in real estate from traditional offices. It is an open market expander, allowing companies to hire the best employee from anywhere, provided they meet the hiring criterias of a great telecommuter.

It's a blessing and also a curse to the Type A personality. I love the freedom to create, explore and solve problems that need to be solved. I like to add value, be part of something larger than myself. As a 7 year telecommuter, I keep excellent "virtual" company with overachievers.. People so passionate and inspired, OR conditioned that they love the notion of their work and solving it's particular problems. They like the freedom of working from home, far removed from office politics, able to product and chart their own course.

Telecommuters must be skilled at remote relationship building, communications and confirming understanding, maintaining alignment to the group and organizational goals, distance collaboration, and setting their own process practices for working effectively.

I don't think all Telecommuters are like me, but I think many of us share the Type A personality. How did such a creative expressive person come to become such an intensely focused, unreasonable "self manager"? Well it comes from values, balance and sensibility.

I value and enjoy those I work with, most often the projects I work on, and the solutions that arive as a result of successfully completing a project and having the results there to claim victory.

All goodness, we are paid to perform right? Our success is measured by success right?

I am challenging myself to meet with other Telecommuters and explore what balanced telecommuting looks like. A new Yahoo Group has been created for Telecommuting Professionals to share news, technology, challenges, and joys. We KNOW how to manage our day, deliverables, and the challenges of telecommuting.

A LinkedIn Professional Telecommuters Yahoo Group is now available for others who currently telecommute, enjoy flexible work options, or aspire to work from home. Important distinction, this group is for professional opportunity telecommuters, so we are not open to the get rich quick or you pay us money and we get you jobs. We KNOW the value of professional telecommuters, and through the power of community, will create greater resource for the work from home professional. We will share about the people challenges, the job opportunities, LinkedIn Business Interest Groups, resources, and technology/tools.

What are your thoughts on telecommuting? Love it? Hate It?? Join us. This network will explore the people, process and technology benefits, challenges, and possibilities a telecommuting workforce brings! If you feel inclined, take our poll on the biggest challenges to telecommuting. Your vote will create the content that we serve up and the topics and solutions we share!! Enjoy!

Living Our Business Values

Conflict arise when we feel we do not have a choice to live our values. If I live my values, relationships, productivity and agreements, why would there be conflict? We all fall short of our potential from time to time, most often because we get bogged down in hiding or negative self image or talk from the world, trying to project something that conflicts with your more authentic self.

Creativity requires dynamics of rapid change, solving ambiguous but diamond in the rough problems-- creating its masterpiece from raw material. Everyone is an artist in their own right, or a master director, spinning classic, or sometimes tragic movies of the mind.

In the book "Illusions, Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah", I remember enjoying the quote, "We seek problems because we need their gifts."

One of my friends relayed this notion as "whatever you focus on expands in your life." Sometimes we get so busy doing or worrying or trying to avoid what we don't want, that we obscure the reality that we really DO want. Rasheed Hooda is in my opinion a Manifesting Genius, who inspires people to be their best selves. His article "Stop Making Money and Start Creating Wealth is great. Hope you enjoy the article and Rasheed as much as I!

My Tips for Living your values:
  1. Identify your strengths and values.
  2. Set New Achieveable goals.
  3. Connect with people whose values match yours.
  4. Follow your purpose, passion and values.
  5. Know where you are and where you want to go before you traverse the journey.
  6. Identify your progress, your achievements, and learnings.
  7. Find the creativity to create success. Exercise the courage to trade those behaviors that do not fit for something inspirational.

Labor Day Tribute.. From an Ohio-an with eyes wide open..

What kind of society to you dream of having?

I have been raised, on true midwestern values of giving people more than they expected, work a little harder than is required. That philosophy has served me in the difficult and the good times.

I discovered while studying on what it means this celebration of labor day, that I was part of the problem by failing to recognize the significance and the relationship between poverty and unemployment, as it affected community. While I have worked many long hours to support the troubled industries and regions affected by natural disaster, I overlooked the affects of poverty, where the situation was grim.. Recent census numbers showed that in my own state, poverty is at record proportion.

With me working from home, and only hearing the news during the 10 minute drive to daycare, I failed to realize that in my own community of Akron, the food banks are struggling with a 66% increased demand for services, while the costs of gas and local economy prohibit some of their charitable donations.

On this labor day, I will be grateful for the possibilities created everyday putting a few more deserving people back to work. Can we discover a way to help more people? Something that has not been tried yet, that would allow us to become truly neighbors and community based?

This weekend I took steps to challenge myself to understand more about the impoverished conditions in my back yard, and to determine what we could do to improve that!

I choose to be part of a societyof possibility thinkers, who are able to hear news for what it is, and respond in a way that is supportive of the community. I choose to be a part of this place I live, listen to the news of my home city, state, or nation, affected to productive action to alleviate the suffering of my neighbors. Poverty and unemployment is more than an unfortunate inconvenience, for many, it kills-- from stress, crime, health related issues, people deserve to raise themselves and their family.. If it takes a community innovation to raise them out of intolerable conditions, let that start with me, for I know I do not stand alone. We can and we must create alternatives.
