Why don't I remember things? I swear I am losing my mind!
Does nothing work? I diet and exercise, and nothing works, can't get out of this health hole I am in. SURE most of us feel guilty about carrying around a few more extra pounds than we need. We babyboomers perhaps have been so busy trying to be the responsible citizens, that some of us lost ourselves in the process.
"I will ___ when ___." Is the grown up baby boomers reward system trap that many of us adopt where self care becomes a reward for positive results that we take on AFTER we have cleaned the house, finished that overtime project at work, remembered to get out of the office in time to schedule the kids doctors appointments.
Some of us accepting diminished health capacity not realizing we ever had a choice!
Recent news articles talked of the impacts of cortisol on mind, body, and health. What the cumulative affects of stress are on our body. It seems the Bobby Ferrin song, "Don't Worry, Be Happy", might hold some sage wisdoms in reminding us of the choices we have in our life.
"Can you die from a broken heart?" Jerome Burn of the Daily Mail shares about the affects and causes of cortisol on the affects of grief and stress on one's health.
The Cortisol Connection: Brain Longevity: Breakthrough Medical Program that improved Mind and Memory written by Dharma Sing Khalsa and Cameron Stauth.
Well Well Well A Higher Cost of Unemployment was a Washington Post article written by Jeffrey G. Ghassemi that highlights the affects of Unemployment Concerns on your health, particularly citing that late career job loss seems to be linked to negative health problems. Further the affects of later job loss might increase the odds of heart attack or stroke by nearly double for households losing jobs at age 50 or older.
In my life story, I kept seeking "second" opinions from doctors who suggested the answer was in reducing my stress levels, because honestly I felt powerless to change them. However I have come to believe that this notion of self care as a reward for my own unreasonable demands, was killing me, and I am in good company with many!
I prided myself on my ability to be flexible and manage to change, but also pushed myself relentlessly against the wisdom of some very smart doctors, and friends, who could see through me, despite my well rehearsed answers to justify why my situation was exceptional.
Dr Jia Gottlieb of Still Mountain in Boulder, Colorado was a model of the wisdom of modern medicine through natural healing. He learned about the affects of stress and healing some of the hardest to diagnose problems. Dr. Gottlieb is a treasure and advised me to do less, rest more, breath, and practice life in balance. He might not have thought I heard him, but today I still hear his advise of such a long time ago and try some of the different approaches he suggested, most of which were way too simple for my love of complexity, and polar opposite to my natural instincts! Dr. Gottlieb provided a wellness program and acupuncture -- amazing! Offers a beautiful and Free Newsletter
Dr Daniel Zelling of Akron Ohio I feel saved my life! So great was the stress, the despair, and regret in my life that I felt powerless to make a decision. When the change master who had "rolled with change" easily had moved cross country, lost social support bases, suffered a series of devastating health disturbances, and then in them midst of personal loss, tried to accept the industry wide layoffs.. Through Medical Hypnosis, and the comforting style of Dr Zelling I emerged more complete and optimistic, more calm , able to make choices, and less worried about my ability to handle life on life's terms. Ohio Institute of Medical Hypnosis features several articles on the affects and treatments of stress.
If you don't have immediate access to a health partner who can diagnose and work with you, here are some alternative possibilities:
* Coping with anxiety on the job by Jeffrey Steele
* Reducing the Effects of Stress Through Nutrition
* Stress Management -awareness of what requires adjustment.
* Understanding Stress and Your Health (About.com)
* Career Counseling to create strategies to manage stress.
Summing it up, Dr Zelling's quote really talks about the problem and its solution.
"Feelings come from thoughts, either conscious or unconscious. You can change your thoughts and thereby your feelings."
-Dr. Daniel A. Zelling

Pre-Layoff Activity Checklists
People matter and Layoffs are difficult for all involved. Here are some PreLayoff Checklists to help all to prepare for a layoff.

(2) Be Available for questions, comments, and concerns. Just being available, not disappearing, giving realistic appropriate advise, not giving false reassurances, acknowledge the difficulty and what you plan to do to support others. Don't make assumptions, continue to ask good questions to communicate.
(3)A certain level of protocol and consistency is both fair and useful. Most will want to know why, selection process, that their contributions were valued, the next steps, and that they can trust you to maintain confidentiality.
(4) Check with Your Corporate HR on their position or expectations for communication, when and what references are expected, etc.

Straight Talk about Career Confidence & Genuine Self during Layoff
The realization that another person wishes to harm and hurt you cannot undermine genuine compassion—a compassion based on the clear recognition of that person as someone who has the natural and instinctual desire to seek happiness and overcome suffering, just like oneself.
-His Holiness the Dalai Lama
No employee is unphased by layoff, whether it is a happy time away from work before you start something new, something unexpected, or something expected, there is no elegant way to handle the unique-ness of individual impact of reductions in workforce.
As realistic as one might be on the business justification, a necessary business right sizing, and really sound logic for why, people's lives, routines, well being, and sometimes their very social system will be upset. The affects of reductions in force due to any reason is cause for introspection, and unmanaged over time can lead to less productive guilt paying defects that multiply over time and layoffs. Some call this "survivor's" or "victim's guilt.
Regardless when one sees the environment and your role in it for what it is, , there is a liberation to explore your role and your choice in continuing that role. Many feel that a layoff is debilitating because it acts so much against one's will.. and yet this often stems from attaching current actions to past failures, as "more evidence" of career failure.
Following are some practical tips for managing to be your genuine self, and act on your values and creativity before self preservation, guilt or shame.
1. People matter, regardless of what the industry says. Realize that a corporate wide layoff affects all stakeholders individually, but definetely. Compassion and expressed appreciation can really go a long way to maintain a relationship despite conditions.
2. Network when you don't need it, to build something useful beyond yourself, to stay connected to something bigger than yourself. If 60% of jobs are found through networking, chances are you might have used networking to get this job that you love, and because of your success, you maintain a level of productivity. Networking is staying connected to being a teacher, and a student with the willingness to learn, grow and help others.
3. Reflection on your values can be refreshing. If you find reductions in force demotivating, explore what would be motivating? What can you do to make a difference? Act within your dreams and values. You are never given a dream that you could not take some tiny steps each day to recognize them.
4. Failure and Success are highly overrated as an ongoing trend. In fact they are merely transactions. A failure can lead to outstanding success... or an outstanding success could result in a power corruption.. None of that matters so much as showing up, giving your most to this day in work and in play, and letting the sun rise to show the truth, and letting the dark pass with some rest, knowing that all these things create balance, even in conflict. Sometimes it is darkest before the dawn, but you can choose to turn on the light at any time!

Boundless Potential.. If you Let it Be
Too often the biggest impediment to activate the laws of possibility is
belief in the notion of limited resources. The world is full of those
who believe they have limitless potential and others constrained by
realistic obstacles--both situations are factually accurate, when
thinking makes it so.
Attraction and inhibition are equal opposites in the possibility
spectrum. The stories we tell ourselves can either attract a
healthy new possibility, or inhibit us from becoming the best we could
be. Here are some of my simple beliefs on creating
possibility.
We can make a difference by exploring and giving our most to that which
is in front of us.

- There WILL be an answer, if we let it be.
- There are steps that will move from inhibition to
attraction. - Momentum is created in consistent persistent, practical effort,
not in willing a favorable outcome. - Self "Talk" can only become "communication" when matched with
Awareness and Attraction. - The person you will become depends upon choosing to nourish mind,
body, and create success! - If the dream is too big, chunk it up into bit size pieces that
inspire you. - Cultivate a friendly support that reminds you of your
capabilities when you are feeling short. - When the student is ready the teacher appears-- but stay flexible
so you don't miss the message.
ACTION STEP POSSIBILITIES:
- Get Rid of What You Don't Want, to Make Room for what you do.
- Produce a Career Portfolio that prepares you for your ideal
career- Resume, Informational Interviews, Work Samples, References,
Networking Profile of wants and need. - Fear overcoming you? Take it to the worst extreme. Go and
volunteer for someone who's needs are much greater than your own.
Kindness towards others has amazing restorative powers. - Research as the antidote for False Limitations. Don't

Feng Shui your Career Search!

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese principles for recognizing balance and harmony. It's wisdom applies to home and office placement, life issues like Career Transformation, yes even Beauty! In this blog we will explore Feng Shui's application through a few quick tips and referral to where you can go to read more about it.
The book that inspired me recently was 10-Minute Clutter Control: Easy Feng Shui Tips for Getting Organized written by Skye Alexander.
Zig Ziglar simplified the notion in his individual style with the statement, "Get rid of what you don't want in life, to make room for what you do want." To do this requires a certain journey into self definition and realistic inventory into what you have and need to get there.
What is it that will really help you? What will give you career satisfaction and joy? With as many hours as you are in the job, it should be a journey of delight rather than an exercise in accumulated frustration. In this blog we will explore the value of life essence simplification, clarification, and definition from the views of Career Transformation.
Clutter is pretty wily, it sneaks up on us over time and affects our abode, advertising, appearance, and attitudes towards work and life. So if clutter occurs as an accumulation over time, then Feng Shui is really a practical application for defining and positioning yourself to live a happy life. Anyone can elect to transform their career, and sometimes we forget that we have a choice, even if that choice we have made, produces physical obstacles that mirror our psychological limitations.
Now who wants to willingly admit that they have a dusty home, an underused "get to it some day" networking profile, or carrying around limitations and beliefs, perhaps closet full of clothes that do not fit any more, but might some day!
Some view clutter as a comfortable protection against fear-- there is ease and relief in the familiar, even if it's primary value is to serve as a reminder of all that remains undone.
You walk in the living room, kicking the toy animal dangling from what once contained 3 lively balloons dancing on a string, energy secured by the anchor to this toy animal. You wake up for bed, get ready for work through your morning ritual, you bite your tongue on your known challenging situations, and "just do it" a few dozen times on difficult or challenging, perhaps boring and redundant tasks, because that is what is required to keep up.
Is keeping up enough for you? Is it allowing you to maintain a level of happiness? If not try some declutter tips that really apply whether the issue is home, health, attitude, life, or career. Identify what is working, what is not working, and take some quick steps every day to live the happiness of your heart!
Clean up clutter-- accumulation over time produces physical obstacles that mirror psychological obstacles. Some view it as protection against fear-- representing comfort in confusion and old baggage.
- What is it that you continually say "you will do it tomorrow" and then remind yourself month after month to do? Make a list and whittle away at this a little every day.
- What no longer fits? If your closets and home contains items you no longer use, enrich the life of others by passing it on. Create a massive garage sales, trading with the neighbors, and donating the rest to charity. You will all benefit from getting rid of what you don't want, making room for what you do want, and creating value for others. Identify your blind spots and personally imposed rules, and set goals and actions to transform them into assets or minimized risks to your happiness.
- What supports and inspires you? Reach out a little bit a day to people who remind you that you can make a difference, and offers you honest open down to earth talks about becoming the best we can be.. Volunteer to help others who are experiencing an extreme that you fear-- enriching the can be a great benefit to you, while you define your worst case scenarios, realizing that even at its seeming unmanageable worst, there is room for transformation!
- What do you need to become the person of your dreams? What old ideals no longer fit? What will you change to recognize happiness?
Let me know your comments and additional thoughts, books or ideas on this topic! I am interested in your results! Another great book is Billy Yamaguchi titled Feng Shui Beauty. Lilian Too is another author of many Feng Shui Topics.

Understanding Personality's Role in Career Satisfaction
Discovering the personality type you possess, and how you communicate this personal style, are can make a dramatic difference in the type of career you would be most happy in. Many great books and resources exist for discovering how to use your natural personality strengths and understand your personality limitations to maximize your career opportunity.
I LOVE to read on this subject, and found it has helped me much to understand more about personality styles and career choice. As a fully expressive Extravert, Intuitive, Feeler, Perceiver , I have found myself working with IT Executives, Analytical Technologists, and Technical Writers, and Service Content Experts... Well being a energetic, enthusiastic, and somewhat polar opposite to the quieter more reserved and detail oriented professional, my "big picture, just do it now cause it feels right style" needed adjustment to really get my message across.
My Challenge? I had no idea who cared about what detail, because the overall strategy was so sound. Not knowing who would need what, I failed to communicate the crisp message, catered to my audience. I did not know how to reach them, why they were not as on board as I, and how to get them involved. For me this was solved by introspection, practice, and repeated failed attempts. Light resources, help to quickly "stay tuned in". Detailed reading into Personality types, helps you identify and optimize your communication style. Finally adopting some of the standard Change Management Resources to how I approached communications helped me improve.
But HEY that is just me, my story, and I am sticking to it. We are all unique. We all have stories, strengths and weaknesses-- awareness and a bit of communications study can go a long way in valuing the differences rather than despising them. We are all more wholly completed by recognizing that we are perfectly personal in our creation, and just need to find the right vehicles and develop the skills that help us highlight that quality of our personal style!

Book Review: If the Buddha Got Stuck (Great for Career Inspiration)
What a delightful, lighthearted story written by Charlotte Kasl, with a Zen approach to embracing the spiritual path for change. It's refreshing view and wisdom applies to all experiencing change. This is not a "religiosity" lecture, but a no nonsense means to view where you are, consider where you aspire to be, and take the steps to get there... All elements of a sound career search.
I read this book at the time when I was facing my own dramatic "stuck-ness". I have come to believe that stuck is as much a choice as fear, attachments, choice, creativity, and serenity. I find myself pulling out a worn bag of tricks to manage my desire to create a new destiny.. Doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result, perhaps hoping that at least in my discomfort is some familiarity. What kind of joy is possible when we can let go of overwhelming and impractical attachments? Charlotte Kasel presents the approach to more clarity and serenity through seven profound and simple steps on the path.

What kind of joy is possible when we can let go of overwhelming and impractical attachments? Charlotte Kasel presents the approach to more clarity and serenity through seven profound and simple steps on the path.
- Notice Where You Are Stuck
- Persistently Show Up
- Pay Attention
- Live in Reality
- Consciously Choose to Connect with Others, and with Life.
- Move from Thought to Action.
- Let go-- success, failure, results, outcomes are all temporary.
- Where was I Stuck?
- Fear of losing a job, being bankrupt, resourceless, friendless.
- Ego ties to irrelevant and unpredictable outcome (Lay off Environment).
- Attachment to work environment that supports autonomy, creativity, flexibility.
- Persistently Show Up
- Decision to be accountable to doing what is in front of me for this day.
- Don't try to stifle fear, take it to it's worst extreme, and allow it to transform.
- Challenge attachments, fear, and realize feelings do not define me, unless I let them.
- Pay Attention
- Observe others and your interactions- aspire to be genuine. A beacon not an anchor.
- A story hidden within is repeated. A story told aloud, can be observed, changed.
- Feelings as experiences of any type, can not be held long-- only observed and let go.
- Live in Reality
- What can I do to prepare for the possibilities of worst failure or best success?
- How would I choose to respond to the worst failure or best successes?
- What is really happening now that I am accountable for?
- Consciously Choose to Connect with Others, and with Life.
- For today, I choose not to hide from others for fear of rejection.
- For today, I will articulate my appreciation for others.
- My worst fears can transform into a positive gift for others. I choose to help,
- Move from Thought to Action.
- Everyday I will do something measurable to recognize the more positive me.
- I will experience life with less draw to the evidentiary scorecard of my failure.
- I will break the "impossible" dream up into the "possible" series of activities.
- Let go-- success, failure, results, outcomes are all temporary.
- Doing today, without the burdens or unreasonable expectations and judgments.
- Joy is not in winning, it is in finding and expanding your capacity for joy.
- Failure, as success, are not a permanent state, and most things happen for a reason, what do you suppose this reason is?
